From Classroom to Career: Preparing the Next Generation of ERP Professionals

As experienced ERP professionals retire and organizations continue investing in EnterpriseOne, one question is becoming increasingly important: Who’s preparing the next generation of JD Edwards professionals?

The ERP Skills Gap Is Real

Many business graduates understand accounting, finance, supply chain, or information systems, but few have hands-on experience working in an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system before entering the workforce.

For employers, that means investing significant time teaching new hires not only company processes, but also the fundamentals of ERP. For students, it often creates the classic challenge of needing experience before landing their first job.

That’s the gap we’re filling with what we call ‘JD Edwards Day One – An Introduction to ERP’.

Bringing JD Edwards Into the Classroom

Through a partnership between Kansas State University and iLearnERP, students are introduced to Enterprise Resource Planning concepts using Oracle JD Edwards EnterpriseOne.

Rather than learning ERP concepts from a textbook, students work in a dedicated JD Edwards training environment and follow the operations of a fictional distribution company. As transactions move through procurement, inventory, finance, sales, and reporting, students see how departments connect and how ERP supports day-to-day business operations. The course finishes with a view into Digital Transformation and now new technologies such as A.I interaction with ERP systems, including EnterpriseOne.

The goal isn’t to create JD Edwards experts overnight, it’s to give students a practical understanding of how modern businesses operate through an ERP system.

What Does the Course Look Like?

The JD Edwards Day One curriculum combines instructor-led learning with hands-on experience. Each lesson includes recorded presentations, instructor notes, guided exercises, quizzes, and practical work inside EnterpriseOne.

Why This Matters

For students, JD Edwards Day One provides exposure to enterprise software before graduation, helping them enter internships and full-time roles with practical ERP knowledge and confidence.

For employers, it helps build a stronger pipeline of graduates who already understand ERP fundamentals, integrated business processes, and the role EnterpriseOne plays in supporting day-to-day operations.

Whether graduates ultimately work with JD Edwards or another ERP platform, the business concepts they learn are transferable across the ERP landscape.
